Many of these challenges do not fall within the traditional role of policing, but our officers do not have the option to walk away from the responsibility. Although our primary mission is to provide law enforcement services to the city, our officers are being called upon to build relationships throughout their service areas and aid the community in solving a multitude of challenges. Our imperative is to provide our citizens with the highest possible level of service. Our focus on addressing social issues, through assistance and community support, which lead to crime will thereby reduce crime in the long term, lower fear of crime and enhance quality of life. From the Chief of Police | Statement on Quality of Life: Although our primary mission is to provide law enforcement services to the City, our officers are being called upon to build relationships throughout their service areas and aid the community in solving a multitude of challenges. The Mission of the Manitou Springs Police Department is to build and maintain a sense of safety and a high quality of life through exemplary customer service. Manitou’s population can triple daily during the tourist season, which runs from late spring to early fall. The MSPD, comprising of a Chief of Police, Commander, 2 Patrol Sergeants, 1 Detective, 12 Patrol Officers, and 2 Civilians, serves 5200 residents in a 3-square mile area. The MSPD is a community-oriented policing agency that practices a proactive form of law enforcement, believing that preventing crime is top priority. Most involve routine matters, such as citizen assists and complaints, but others may involve assaults, thefts, and illegal drugs. Anyone with information on these incidents is asked to call ISPD.The Manitou Springs Police Department (MSPD) typically handles more than 10,000 calls for service each year. One was a motorcycle that was taken from a resident’s garage in the 2500 block of Colorado Boulevard, and the other was a white Ford F-150 utility truck that was taken from the 2000 block of Wall Street. Sunday, June 27 - Over the past week, Idaho Springs police have taken two stolen vehicle reports. Officers remained on scene until the other parent picked up the child. Officers found the call was about an altercation between a parent and child, the latter of whom was apparently having trouble controlling his anger. Saturday, June 26 - Idaho Springs officers responded to an assault-in-progress report near exit 241 of eastbound Interstate 70. Thursday, June 24 - Empire police followed up on a noise complaint in the 100 block of South Main Street. Officers were unable to locate anyone in the area and eventually contacted a pedestrian and others on Morrison Lane, but no one had called 911. Thursday, June 24 - Empire police and sheriff’s deputies responded to a 911 hang-up that apparently originated near mile marker 254 of U.S. After an EMS evaluation, she was released back to her parents. When officers and EMS personnel responded, the girl had been quickly removed from the water and had regained consciousness. Wednesday, June 23 - Idaho Springs officers were dispatched to the 2300 block of Colorado Boulevard for a report of a child losing consciousness and falling in the creek. The dog owner was warned about both the leash ordinance and picking up after one’s pet. Officers determined that the disturbance had been over a dog owner having his dog off-leash and not picking up its waste. When officers arrived, two people seemed to have separated and were calming down. Wednesday, June 23 - Idaho Springs officers were dispatched a disturbance in the 2800 block of Riverside Drive. A man believed to be associated with the campsite was located and warned against camping within town limits. Tuesday, June 22 - Georgetown police responded to a report of illegal camping near the back of Georgetown Lake. He was taken into custody and booked into the county jail. Police contacted several people and determined one had an active warrant for his arrest. Monday, June 21 - Georgetown police responded to a disturbance in the 900 block of Argentine Street.
